Juan Gregorio de las Heras (
Buenos Aires,
1780 –
Santiago de Chile,
1866) was an
Argentine military who took part in the
South American Wars of Independence and was also a governor of the
province of
Buenos Aires.
He fought for the resistance against the
British invasions of the Río de la Plata (1806–1807) and then entered the Army. In 1813 he took charge of a part of the
Army of the Andes, replacing
Antonio González Balcarce. After the
Disaster of Rancagua in 1814, he returned to
Mendoza,
Argentina. He also participated in the liberating expedition to
Peru.
After his retirement from the Army, he was appointed governor of Buenos Aires by the Chamber of Representatives, succeeding General
Martín Rodríguez. He signed a treaty with
Britain acknowledging the independence of the United Provinces of the Río de la Plata. In 1826 he was replaced by
Bernardino Rivadavia.
De las Heras finally moved and settled in Chile, and died in
Santiago in 1866, at the age of 86.
